Traffic was rerouted on Dallas Avenue near Lapsley Street Monday afternoon as officers from the Selma Police Department (SPD) and local tow services worked to clear the street of an overturned pickup truck, the result of a collision caused by a fleeing motorist.

According to SPD Capt. Johnny King, an SPD officer was flagged down on the 400 block of King Street by a female motorist who claimed that she was being harassed by a male subject in a vehicle parked nearby.

The driver was Mac Norwood, 41, who had previously been in a relationship with the female complainant.

According to King, officers attempted to speak with Norwood about the complaint but, when they approached, he fled the scene at a “high rate of speed” and refused to stop for the flashing blue lights and howling sirens of the police car close behind him.

King stated that Norwood was travelling at roughly 60 miles per hour through a neighborhood where the posted speed limit is 25 miles per hour when he began travelling south on Lapsley Street before colliding with a vehicle travelling westbound on Dallas Avenue.

The impact flipped the other motorist’s vehicle and snatched the camper shell from it, sending it a few yards away from the site of the collision.

As officers were rendering aid to the driver of the overturned vehicle, King said Norwood attempted to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by an officer and taken into custody.

Norwood was charged with attempting to elude, leaving the scene of an accident, domestic violence/harassment and a parole violation – he was then booked, processed and transported to the Dallas County Jail under a hold for the parole violation.
