Medical Matters 2020 kicked off at the Selma – Dallas County Public library on Friday morning.
Medical Matters, a partnership between the library, UAB Family Medicine – Selma and Vaughan Regional Medical Center (VRMC), is a lecture series in which the community is able to come to the library and receive information about living a healthy lifestyle.
“This is just one more step in the fellowship that we’re gaining with the medical community and that the Selma community is gaining information, which means that the library is doing its job,” said Selma-Dallas County public Library Director Becky Nichols.
Friday’s lecture was presented by UAB Family Medicine’s Dr. Namita Tiwari.
Tiwari discussed with the crowd gathered at the library the importance of maintaining heart healthy habits in living a healthy life style.
During the lecture, Tiwari discussed the risk factors of heart disease, hypertension and changes people can make to prevent heart difficulties.
“The heart is the most vital organ in the human body,” said Tiwari. “If the heart is diseased it’s going to affect every other organ system in your body.”
Tiwari said she’s seen many patients with heart disease in Selma and offered advice to eliminate risk factors for heart disease.
Tiwari cited exercise, eating a healthy diet and reducing the consumption of sodium and unhealthy fast food as simple ways to reduce risk of heart disease.
