Selma High School has received a $10,000 grant from International Paper (IP) Company to purchase healthy snacks for students for the remainder of the school year.

“We’re really excited about this grant that allows us to provide snacks for our scholars over the weekend,” said Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams. “We know that some of our families that live in poverty have a difficult time feeding their children over the weekends. For some of our [students], the best meals they get are at school and even just that short weekend break can sometimes create a challenge. We’re just grateful to be able to provide some support for that.”

Selma High School Principal Stoney Pritchett said that the healthy snacks are distributed every Friday.

The grant also provides snacks to students who are at school longer due to extracurricular activities like band, choir and athletics.

Pritchett expressed his gratitude toward International Paper and the Selma High faculty members who applied for the grant.

“It means a lot to me that we can make sure our students have something to eat,” he said.

Lisa James, Selma High’s Media Center Director and Senior Advisor, initially applied for the grant and echoed Pritchett’s sentiment.
“I’m just so excited about helping our community,” she said.
