The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.’s chapter in Dallas County hosted host a College and Career Fair Saturday at the Ivy and Pearl Center.

Several junior and senior students in Dallas County attended the AKA’s national initiative, the College Admission Process (CAP), organized by the Zeta Eta Omega Chapter.

Auburn University, UAB, Troy University, Knoxville College, Alabama A&M University and Wallace Community College-Selma (WCCS) all had representatives talking to students about the requirements of attending college and different careers.

WCCS Women’s Assistant basketball coach Yulonda Randolph discussed the NCAA freshmen eligibility requirements as a student-athlete. Randolph urged students to maintain a qualifying GPA, ACT or SAT score and take the right classes for Division I eligibility through NCAA Clearing House.

Dr. Dowanda Pullom, a Nursing Supervisor at Vaughan Regional Medical Center, discussed the various nursing careers, which ranged from staff nurses to nurse managers.

Amber Milton and Nina Robinson, Auburn graduates and Zeta Eta Omega members, said they were happy to advise the high school students.

“It feels good to give back the same way we got helped,” Robinson said.

“Having an event like this can help them get through the college process,” Milton said.

Jon Sanders and Jamario Blevins, who attended Dallas County High School and Keith High School, said they were grateful for the advice.

“I learned that it’s all good to get information ahead of time to be prepared,” Sanders said.

“I learned a lot about the different ways to get scholarships, financial aid grants and ACT qualifying,” Blevins said.
