Links to host Heart Health Fair this weekend

The Selma Chapter of The Links, Inc. will host a Heart Health Fair this Saturday, Feb. 1, at the YMCA from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., the theme of which is “Healthy Heart, Healthy You”.

The Links partnered with Michael Johnson’s MJ 93-90 Foundation and Rural Health Medical Program, Inc. (RHMPI) to make the event possible.

According to Links Chapter president Dorothy Barnes, the event was put together to raise awareness of the risk factors associated with heart disease that can be controlled.

“February is American Heart Health Month, the perfect time to learn about your risk for heart disease and the steps you need to take now to help your heart,” said Barnes.

The Heart Health Fair was coordinated by Dr. Patricia Robinson and Phenicia Nunn.

Robinson said it meant a lot to her to be a facilitator for the event.

“Ms. Nunn and I have dedicated or time to educate people about the risk factors that can be modified to decrease their risk of dying from heart disease,” sad Robinson. “Heart disease is the number one cause of death in men and women. One person die every 37 seconds in the United States from cardiovascular disease. My father died of a heart attack at the age of 62.”

Saturday’s health fair will include many activities for participates interested in maintain a healthy heart including a keynote presentation from Selma cardiologist Dr. Steven Allyn, glucose and cholesterol screenings by the RHMPI, fitness and CPR demonstrations, a healthy food demonstration, wellness counseling by UAB Family Medicine, music, healthy snacks and door prizes for participants in the Heart Health Scavenger Hunt.

The event is free and open to the public.
