Gun discharged at J.E. Hobbs Elementary School

A first-grade student at J.E. Hobbs Elementary School in Wilcox County brought a firearm to school on Friday and the gun accidentally discharged.

According to Fourth Judicial District Attorney Michael Jackson, the firearm accidentally discharged in the pocket of the six-year-old child who possessed the firearm.

Jackson said no one was injured, but the bullet put a hole in the wall. The Camden Police Department, Wilcox County Department of Human Resources and Superintendent Dr. Andre Saulsberry were immediately contacted. The school was placed on lockdown.

The child’s parents are being charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a crime regarded as a misdemeanor. Identities of the child and parents were not revealed.
