The staff of Selma University and its supporters will host a gospel concert to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and raise money to pay off its $2 million in debt to the U.S. Department of Education and establish an endowment for the university.

The concert will be held on Jan. 18 at 5 p.m., with the doors opening at 4 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $10 in advance and can be purchased at Selma University, On Time Fashions and Team Work barbershop in Selma, at Bones Grocery or from Harold McCord in Camden, at Calhoun Barbershop in Thomasville or from Addie Woods in Marion.

Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $15.

The concert’s lineup features several groups and individuals from the Black Belt, including The Angelic Harmonizers, Mighty Mountain Aires, Anointed Four, East Dallas District Choir, Spring Hill Male Chorus, Al Johnson High School Choir, Hannah Thomas, Daisy Dixon and Donald McLeod.

“People in the black community love gospel music,” said Bruce Holmes, a community supporter. “This will be a fitting tribute and fundraiser.”

Selma University is working with its community supporters, local and state politicians and the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention to raise the funds needed by the university to gain recertification of Federal Student Financial Assistance Programs as quickly as possible.

The upcoming concert is the university’s second event that has been organized by the Selma University Giving Committee.
