A Selma man was convicted for illegal possession of a firearm last week.

A Selma jury at the U.S. Federal Courthouse convicted Jessie James Turner, Jr. of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm on Nov. 14. The trial lasted three days before the Selma Jury reached a verdict.

U.S. District Court Judge Terry F. Moorer presided over the trial and set Turner’s sentencing for Feb. 27, 2020.

The incident occurred on Nov. 8, 2018 when Selma Police Department (SPD) responded to a call at the 100 Block of Mabry Street regarding a round of shots fired. After arriving to the scene, SPD officers heard at least 12 rounds being fired from inside an apartment.

Officers secured the scene and then entered the residence from the rear of the apartment.  Turner, 46, was apprehended by Selma Special Operations and Patrol Units at gunpoint as he fled out the front door. He was found in possession of two AR-15 assault rifles and a .40 caliber handgun.

Federal law prohibits Turner from being in possession of firearms or ammunition as a result of his previous felony convictions. The jury acquitted Turner of being in possession of a stolen firearm.

The case was tried by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kasee S. Heisterhagen and Assistant U.S. Attorney George F. May, Deputy Criminal Chief.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the SPD.
