The Patriots knocked off Shelton State Community College on Monday.

WCCS coach Duane Evans is pleased with the Patriots’ fast start, but he’s focused on the bigger picture.

“We had high expectations for the guys this season,” Evans said. “I’m excited on what we’ve done so far, but it’s where you finish, not how you start. We’re trying to get our guys focused on conference play.”

Sophomore guard Antonio Jones leads the Patriots with 19 points a game, third in the Alabama Community College Association.

“We’ve gotten great guard play,” Evans said. “We have great guys who have bought into the system. That’s a key ingredient to having a successful season.”

Sophomore guards Marlon Sharp and Jones were the only two returning starters for WCCS.

Travarus Carroll, Corey Thomass and Michael Kirkland are the other sophomores for WCCS.

Selma’s Tyshawn Garner, Rodney Battle, Jaelon Agee, Rakiem Gary, Jabez Sims, Jashavious Perdue, Ahmad Green, Keshon Lockhart, Jamar Jackson and Keaun Samuels are the freshmen.

Willie Maxey and Montego Hoskin are the assistant coaches.
