The Wallace Community College-Selma basketball team have high expectations this season.
The Patriots open the season against Marion Military Institute at 2 p.m. Saturday at home.
Sophomore guards Marlon Sharp and Antonio Sharp are the only two returning starters for WCCS, but Patriots coach Duane Evans has confidence in the squad.
“We don’t have a lot of guys coming back, but we’ve got a good group of kids,” Evans said. “We had a lot of kids who got redshirted last year and we believe they’ll make an impact.”
Travarus Carroll, Corey Thomass and Michael Kirkland are the other sophomores for WCCS.
Selma’s Tyshawn Garner, Rodney Battle, Jaelon Agee, Rakiem Gary, Jabez Sims Jashavious Perdue, Ahmad Green, Keshon Lockhart, Jamar Jackson and Keaun Samuels are the freshmen.
Willie Maxey and Montego Hoskin are the assistant coaches.
Garner, a member of The Selma Times-Journal’s All-Dallas County basketball team at Selma High last year, said he’s looking forward to starting a new chapter in his career.
“It will be a good experience for me playing JUCO basketball,” Garner said. “I’ll get to meet new people and play in different places.”
