The Lupus Foundation of America’s Mid-South Chapter hosted a “Walk to End Lupus Now” on Saturday in collaboration with Selma’s Wellness in Living with Lupus Successfully Support Group.
Though the event had to be moved from Bloch Park to the gymnasium at Wallace Community College – Selma, a large crowd filled the gym to show their support for those affected by the disease.
Lupus Foundation of America’s Mid-South Chapter President Tracy Rhode was at Saturday’s event to take part in the walk and commend the people of Selma for their hard work in doing what they can to battle the disease.
According to statistics provided by Rhode, scientists and doctors don’t know what causes Lupus. The disease attacks its own cells, causing tiredness, swelling, pain and damage to organs like the skin, lungs and kidneys.
Rhode said that the disease can be different for each person who has it, citing that some may feel ill all of the time while others do not look or act sick.
According to Rhode, 9 out 10 Lupus patients are women of color.
“We work really hard to educate those at a high risk of Lupus,” said Rhode.
Rhode added that awareness of Lupus has increased 60 percent within the last few years and that a much greater percentage of the population are aware of the disease.
“That’s our goal,” she said. “Making sure as many people know about this disease as possible.”
