Troy University football coach Chip Lindsey is familiar with the city of Selma.

Lindsey was the guest speaker at the Selma Quarterback Club on Monday at the Selma Convention Center.

As an assistant coach at Southern Miss, Lindsey recruited Ernest Gunn, a Selma native who played cornerback at Northview High School in Johns Creek, Georgia.

Lindsey met Michael Johnson, a former Dallas County High School and Georgia Tech standout as the head coach at Lassiter High School in Marietta, Georgia. Johnson recently retired from the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals.

“Michael Johnson was awesome with our players and he worked out with them,” Lindsey said. “Georgia Tech wasn’t that far from our school. His cousin, Cedric Dickerson, was an assistant coach at Lassiter. He’s also from Selma.”

Lindsey, 45, made no excuses about the Trojans’ 2-3 record.

“We’re a few plays away from being 4-1, but we’re 2-3,” Lindsey said. “We’re not happy about being 2-3. We’re playing four freshmen on defense. I see a lot of improvement.  I like our team.”

The Trojans have an open date and will host South Alabama on Oct. 16 at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy. ESPN2 will televise the Sun Belt Conference game.

“We needed a bye week and it couldn’t have come  at a better time,” Lindsey said. “South Alabama is a  big rivalry game for us.”
