Jewell DeBardeleben Butler

Jewell DeBardeleben Butler went to be with her Lord and her loved ones on September 23, 2019, following a brief illness. She passed away peacefully in Tupelo, Mississippi, surrounded by her family and friends.
Jewell was born in Selma on November 11, 1925. She attended Selma public schools and she was a student at Huntington College in Montgomery for two years and subsequently was graduated from the University of Alabama where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. In 1958 she met the love of her life, Charles Morgan Butler, to whom she was married for 58years. For two years, they lived in Boston, Massachusetts, and later in Tuscaloosa, where Charley received his PhD. In 1972 they moved to Starkville, Mississippi, where he was a professor at MSU for 23 years. Meanwhile, Jewell spent many years in the insurance industry along with rearing their three daughters. She was a longtime member of Grace Presbyterian Church.
Jewell is survived by her loving daughters and their families: Louise Butler Ebentier of Encinitas, California (husband, Jim; daughter, Darcy and son, James), Kathy Butler Hord of San Diego, California, (daughter, Laura and son, Scott), and Jeanne Caldwell Butler of Brandon, Mississippi. She is also survive by her brother, Perry Caldwell DeBardeleben, Jr., and devoted cousin, Ouida Miller Lide. She was preceded in death by her parents, Louise Rowell DeBardeleben and Perry Caldwell DeBardeleben, Sr., and her husband, Charley.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma with Rev. Steve Burton officiating and Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any memorials be sent to the charity of one’s choice.
