As Monday night’s Dallas County Commission Meeting came to an end, Commissioner Larry Nickles had an announcement to share with the rest of the commission and everyone else in attendance at the meeting.
During his commissioner report, Nickles announced he would not seek reelection next year.
Nickles, has served as Dallas County Commissioner, representing District 4, for four terms.
Nickles did not hide the emotional weight of his decision as he made his announcement.
“I’ve thought about this long and hard,” said Nickles, tears collecting in his eyes. “God put me in a position to run for this position four times. I wanted three. He’s telling me now, ‘Don’t seek re-election.’ I believe I have a higher calling. I want each and every one of you to appreciate that.”
Nickles thanked everyone who has supported him over the years, and encouraged everyone to continue to support the Dallas County Commission in the future.
Commissioner Valerie Reubin was the first to comment about Nickles’ announcement during her commissioner report.
“Larry, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” said Reubin. “I’ve enjoyed working with you.”
Commissioner Roy Moore was the next to weigh in.
“Larry,” he said, “You’ve been one of the best commissioners to serve on this commission. I don’t know of anybody who’s worked any harder to serve his district.”
“We thank God for Larry,” said Dallas County Commissioner Curtis Williams. “His hard work. His dedication. You can depend on Larry. If he says something he means just what he says. I’ve known Larry all of his life. I’ve been with him through thick and thin, up and down, good and bad but he has remained the same throughout the years.”
Williams commended Nickles on his dedication to Dallas County and his vigilant efforts to improve it.
“Let me echo the same sentiments for Commissioner Nickles,” said Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn. “I have always thought of Commissioner Nickles as being a man of God. He has always been a man that you can trust. If he says that he’s going to do it, he’s going to do it. He’s never been any different than he is today…I admire you for doing what God has told you to do. Do what God tells you to do.”
Nickles added during the commissioner’s reports that his term isn’t over until November 2020.
“I’m not going anywhere until then,” he said.
