With September being National Recovery Month, the Dallas County Court Services is hosting a series of events aimed at promoting recovery and emphasizing the reminder that “prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover.”

Substance abuse is something that touches all involved either through someone’s own use, as a victim of a substance abuser or as the person bearing the emotional, mental and financial burden of a family member whose use is out of control, according to Miah Jackson, who is the Director of Dallas County Court Services.

“Watching family members’ lives wither away and observing the devastating legal, health and financial consequences of their use can devastate families. These problems are solvable and sufferers are not without hope,” Jackson said.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is the lead in the effort to celebrate recovery.

It is within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Servies that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities.

It is important we all recognize how far those that have been impacted by substance abuse have come.

It should be something that is recognized all year instead of being confined to one month.
