The Selma City Schools Board of Education held a called meeting Thursday afternoon at the Central Office.
The board members gathered to discuss teacher contracts, partial re-roofing of Edgewood Elementary School, modernization of elevators at R.B. Hudson STEAM Academy and a number of personnel recommendations, all recommended by Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams.
The first item approved by the board were contracts for Rebecca Nichols, who will provide assistance to students who need additional remediation in reading at School of Discovery, and Curtis Black, who will serve as a substitute administrator at School of Discovery through Oct. 1.
The board then approved the $45,000 contract with Lathan Associates Architects to partially re-roof Edgewood Elementary School.
According to Williams, the school’s library is the affected area and it cannot be used by the school’s students until the roof has been repaired.
Williams said that a large percentage of the projects cost will be covered by insurance claims.
The board then approved a $95,000 contract, also with Lathan Associates Architects, to modernize the elevators at R.B. Hudson STEAM Academy.
“One thing we have to do is get this elevator in,” said Board Member Dr. Tanya Miles. “Because if the people [auditors] come in and see that there’s no way to access the second level for our handicapped kids, we’re going to be fined on that.”
