Notasulga defeated Southside 28-14 in a Jamboree contest on Friday at Panthers Stadium.

The contest doesn’t count in the standings, but it marked the debut of new Panthers head coach Charles Moody.

Ellwood Christian Academy and R.C. Hatch were scheduled to compete in the scrimmage, but they didn’t show up. Nota

Tyshawn Wilson and Taye Spears each scored touchdowns for the Panthers in the jamboree.

“The jamboree provided good film for us to analyze,” Moody said. “It’s a good teaching tool for us.”

Moody said teaching football can translate into game action if executed properly.

“To me, coaching football is like a classroom,” Moody said. “There’s things that we can teach the players.”

Moody said he saw plenty of positives for the Panthers, who went 0-10 last year.

Ernest Hatcher and Spears made spectacular catches from quarterback Christopher Thomas. When Thomas got protection from the Panthers’ offensive line, he threw accurate, crisp passes and hit open receivers. The defense also made several stops.

“We did a lot of good things, but we couldn’t finish,” Moody said.  “We get to their three-yard-line, but couldn’t punch it in.”

Southside opens its against crosstown rival Selma High next Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
