Boy Scouts prepare for annual shrimp boil

Though October still seems far away in the midst of these sweltering temperatures the City of Selma has been experiencing lately, the Selma – Dallas County Boy Scouts are getting prepared for their 3rd Annual Shrimp and Sausage Boil this fall.

“The last two years went great, we’ve learned a lot about how to host a successful shrimp boil,” said Boys Scouts District Commissioner Bob Myers. “We’ve got all the bugs worked out, we expect this one to be our best yet.”

According to Myers, the event has been a great fundraiser for the scouts the last two years, with $4,500 being raised at last year’s boil.

This year, the scouts have more than doubled last year’s funds as their goal for this year’s event.

‘We’re aiming for $10,000,” said Myers.

Myers says that the scouts put money raised from the event to good use by creating scholarships for underfunded campers so they can be sure to experience all of the fun the scouts has to offer.

As District Commissioner, Myers acts as the liaison between local Boy Scout leaders and the leaders in Montgomery.

“I check with the local leaders and see what they need,” he said.

Myers feels that the scouts are an excellent program for local young people to be involved with, explaining his passion for the upcoming shrimp boil.

“One of our problems here locally is there isn’t a whole lot of programs for kids to be involved with,” he said. “But scouting provides them with something to do and enjoy. It teaches them responsibility, pride in themselves and pride in their country.”

Myers and the Boy Scouts have already secured quite a few sponsors for the approaching event including Henry Brick, Downtowner Restaurant, Vaughan Regional Medical Center, First Cahaba Bank, Screenco, American Legion, State Farm Insurance and Pepsi.

Aside from the event supporting a cause that’s dear to him, Myers loves the festivity of the shrimp boil.

“My favorite part is watching everyone have a good time,” he said. “It’s a really great family oriented event.”
