The upcoming community design forum was the main subject of conversation at Thursday afternoon’s monthly Selma Redevelopment Authority (SRA) meeting.
SRA’s Chairman Juanda Maxwell and Vice Chairman Billy Young are both in high hopes that as many people in the community as possibnle come out to support the event.
Young stressed what a unique opportunity this really is for Selma, stating how rarely citizens have a say in the look of their city.
“So many times, Selma’s story is told by outsiders,” said Young. “This is Selma’s opportunity to tell its own story.”
During the upcoming forum, the citizens of Selma will have the opportunity to share with the architects, designers and city planners of DesignAlabama their hopes and ideas for the future of the city.
In order for the project to be successful, it’s important that the forum be well attended,” said Maxwell.
“It’s very important people take advantage of this opportunity,” added Young.
According to Maxwell, once the ideas from the community have been presented to DesignAlabama, the organization will then create a narrative which will be turned into blueprints by an architechture program from a nearby university.
Once those blueprints are created, the SRA can share the plan with potential investors in order to bring outside money to the city.
Young also shared that he, along with SRA Member Clint Wilkinsion are working on a plan to identify all of the properties located in Selma’s opportunity zones.
“That’s really the key to bringing outside money to Selma,” said Young. “Once we have a list of all of those properties we can find people who want to participate and locate potential investors.”
Maxwell thanked all of the SRA members in their efforts to improve the city.
“We are all volunteers,” she said. “Not one of us are getting paid for any of this.”
The SRA’s upcoming community forum will take place at ArtsRevive on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 5:3.
