Morgan Academy pitcher Jeremy Lee made a college choice  several days before his senior year begins.

Lee has verbally committed to play college baseball at South Alabama after graduating from high school.

UAB, Troy, Southern Miss and Central Florida were the other Division I schools that offered Lee a scholarship, but he chose the Jaguars in the end.

“I chose South Alabama because I felt like the coaches wanted me,” Lee said. “Their facilities are top of the line. They have a very good baseball program. At South Alabama, I’ll have a chance to play in the Regionals and Super Regionals.”

Morgan Academy baseball coach Stephen Clements said the Jaguars are getting an outstanding player.

“I’m super proud of Jeremy,” Clements said. “We have a great relationship with the staff at South Alabama for Jeremy Lee. It is a great program with a great staff that just got a great baseball player but an even better young man. God has truly blessed our baseball program at Morgan Academy.”

Lee earned several accolades during the Senators’ historic run to the AISA State Baseball finals. He was named to The Selma Times-Journal’s All Dallas County baseball, AWSA pitcher of the year and AISA All-Tournament and ASWA All-State teams.

The 6-foot-1 Lee said it was tough to stop playing football. He was The Selma Times-Journal’s football player of the year. He also made the ASWA All-Star football team as an athlete.

“It was tough to give up football,” Lee said. “I’ll miss Friday night lights and everything that comes with playing football. But I felt like choosing baseball was the best decision to stay healthy.”

Lee will sign during the fall signing period in November. With a 3.6 GPA and 24 ACT score, he has  already qualified academically.

Morgan Academy football coach and athletic director Josh Thacker said he appreciated Lee’s role in helping the Senators go 9-3 and  land a Top 10 AISA ranking in 2018.

“Jeremy is a great young man with a bright future,” Thacker said. “He gave us everything he had last year and we thank him for that. Football player or not, Jeremy will always have a special place in my heart.”
