Selma City Schools hold Aim for Excellence 5K

The Selma City Schools held its second annual Annual AIM for Excellence 5K, One Mile Fun Run and Walk on Saturday at Bloch Park.
Over 50 participants competed in the event that officially kicks off the year for Selma City Schools. Selma City Schools started classes on Monday. Selma Police Department officers, school officials and school board members were among the local entities who contributed.
“This event celebrates the start of the school year,” Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams said. “We’re also promoting health and fitness. It lets our scholars know we are thinking of them. It’s also a way of bringing the community together.”
Selma City Schools Community Engagement Specialist Courtney Washington said all of the participation fees will be collected and donated to Selma City Schools athletics and physical education programs.
Several local businesses sponsored the event: Blu Designs, Song Eye Center, William Potter and Family, McKee Associates Architecture and Interior Design, Children’s Dentistry of Alabama, Vaughan Regional Medical Center and Donnies Vending and Wholesale.
Children’s Dentistry of Alabama hygienist Bailey Blackmon said its crucial to help support education in the Queen City.
“It’s important to support the Selma School System and make it better for the kids,” Blackmon said.
