Selma City Schools will conclude its back to school festivities with Fun Fest Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. – noon.
Fun Fest follows a Uniform Giveaway at 8:30 and the Aim for Excellence 5K and 1Mile Fun Run at 7:30 a.m.
The annual event, hosted by Highway 80 Tax Service, has served the children of the Selma community since 2013.
Tamika Suggs of Highway 80 Tax Service, who organizes the event each year, says she came up with the event as a way to give back to the community.
“This is our way to give back,” she said. “We just want show our support for the community and let them know we’re behind them.”
At Saturday’s Fun Fest, around 700 book bags filled with pencils, paper, folders, notebooks and everything else k-12 kids need to begin the school year will be handed out for free.
According to Suggs, the book bags are curated based upon the needs of the students.
Younger children will receive scissors and glue sticks for all of the arts and crafts done in earlier grades and the older students will receive more paper and notebooks for the larger amount of class work and notetaking required in middle and high school.
In addition to the book bags, Suggs says that loose school supplies like extra paper and pencils will be available for those that need it.
“Not every student is able to have new school supplies at the beginning of the school year,” said Suggs. “This is our way to make sure each child gets what they need.”
Not only will students be able to pick up free school supplies, but younger children will be able to enjoy a bounce house and meet cartoon characters.
Suggs also says that there will be complimentary food and drinks for everyone to enjoy.
Suggs encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the free food and school supplies.
“We’ve got plenty for everyone,” she said.
