Morgan Academy golfer Jones Free played a key role in Team Alabama capturing a fourth straight Southern Junior Cup Championship.
Team Alabama defeated squads from Missouri and Mississippi at Willow Point Golf & Country Club this week in Alexander City.
The Southern Junior Cup is an invite-only, Ryder Cup format co-ed team competition of amateur golfers.
“It was the top six girls golfers in the state and the top six boys golfer in the state for the most part,” Free said.
Free, a junior, was paired with Michaela Morard in the three-day event. They played four-ball match and alternate shot, winning by scores of 5-and-3, 5-and-4 and 5-and-3.
“It was a lot of fun,” Free said. “We’re both going to play golf at the University of Alabama in a few years. It was a great experience.”
Free said him winning the the 70th Press Thornton Future Masters Golf Tournament on June 30 was the reason he got picked for the Southern Junior Cup.
“They chose me because I won the Future Masters Tournament,” Free said. “I was honored to play in the Southern Junior Golf Championship. It was a pleasure to play in the tournament.”
Jones has won three other golf titles since the spring.
He won the 91st annual Selma Country Club Invitational Men’s Golf Tournament. Free also helped Morgan Academy win the AISA State Golf Championship.
