Selma City Schools 2nd Annual AIM for Excellence 5K, One Mile Fun Run and Walk is scheduled for this Saturday.
After a successful event last year, Selma City Schools Community Engagement Specialist Courtney Washington anticipates a large turnout this year as well.
“We saw around 100 participants last year,” said Washington, “We’re Expecting at least that many this year.”
Washington is rooting for as many people to show up this year as possible, all the participation fees will be collected and donated to Selma City Schools athletics and physical education programs.
“This year’s funds will go towards athletics and P.E.,” said Washington.
Washington added that participants will be able to choose what programs their funding goes toward.
Washington has been hard at work encouraging everyone to come out to the event and show their support for the schools, even if they don’t like to run.
“We really want everyone to come out,” she said. “Walking is highly encouraged as well, we had a lot of participants walk last year.”
For those who are serious runners, Washington is challenging everyone who registers to beat last year’s winner, Selma City Schools Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams.
In addition to the race, there will be plenty of other activities on hand, including a uniform giveaway beginning at 8:30 a.m.
“Last year’s giveaway was really nice,” said Washington. “We had it set up like a little store.”
Washington added that Americorps would be the ones conducting the giveaway again this year.
Washington also expressed her thanks to all of the 5K’s sponsors, including Blu Designs, Song Eye Center, William Potter and Family, McKee Associates Architecture and Interior Design, Children’s Dentistry of Alabama, Vaughan Regional Medical Center and Donnies Vending and Wholesale.
“We couldn’t have done it without them,” said Washington.
The race begins at 7:30 Saturday morning.
