Dallas County Schools Chief School Financial Officer (CSFO) Brenda Turner delivered the financial report to the Board of Education one final time Tuesday night before her retirement at the end of this month.
According to Turner the Alabama tax collected for the month of May was $158,363.
“Over the past eight months,” added Turner, “This is $18,800 less than the first eight months of last year. Just to compare, it’s a little bit down.”
Turner informed the board that the fund balance ending as of May 2019 was $3,523,372.
“Our reserve requirement is $2,177,763 dollars. So right now we’re $1,345,609 dollars above our current one-month reserve requirement. We’ve still got four more months to go,” said Turner.
Turner then added that the second budget amendment is awaiting approval and that she and incoming CSFO Sheila Purdy have been participating in training to prepare Purdy for her new role.
Board President Leroy Miles then inquired about Purdy’s training status.
“She’s learning well she’s ready to take it on,” said Turner.
Miles then commended Turner on a job well done and thanked her for her hard work as CSFO.
“Thank you for a great job and we’re going to miss you and we appreciate everything you’ve done,” said Miles. “You’ve done an excellent job managing funds and getting us to a point where we’re almost in the clear. You will be missed and I really appreciate what you’ve done. Since I’ve been on the Board, I’ve seen this [finances] improve greatly.”
Turner then tried not to become emotional as she bid farewell to the Board.
“I’ll miss ya’ll too,” said Turner. “I don’t want to cry so I’m not going to say a lot. It’s been a joy. Sometimes it’s not exactly been a joy, but overall I’ve enjoyed my whole experience.”
Turner was the applauded by the room.
