Summer fun, new skills

Edmundite Missions 2019 Summer New Possibilities Youth Program, which began June 3 and will continue until July 12, provides Selma’s children with an entertaining way to spend their summer and a way to learn new skills as well.

According to Edmundite Missions CEO Chad McEachern, the program keeps students mentally sharp over the summer and also teaches them about new opportunities.

“Our goal is not only to provide academic support for the children to help prevent any ‘brain drain’ over the course of the Summer, but also to highlight New Possibilities,” said McEachern. “With so many challenges present in our community, too many of our kids don’t see the avenues open to them. When our children meet lawyers, politicians, fighter pilots, baseball players, and so on they see the potential for a future filled with joy and hope.”

McEachern believes it’s important to invest in Selma’s children.

“Selma’s children are our greatest resource,” he said. “We want our kids to enjoy the summer and we have a lot of fun field trips going on. But we also want them to continue to master the skills that will allow them to make the most of their classroom time and be ready to compete at the next level.”

This year, the camp is focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

“Not only are these the skills needed to succeed in the classroom,” said McEachern, “But they open our children’s eyes to the careers of the future.”

McEachern stated that the program is a huge asset to the community. He also looks forward to the completion of the new Community Center currently under construction on Broad Street.

“It will give us even more room to share the hope and joy of Christ with young people and all members of our community,” he said.
