Randall Miller, of Randall Miller Funeral Service and Crematory, was named this year’s recipient of The Selma Rotary Club’s Citizen of the Year Award.
Miller, to his surprise, was honored at Tuesday afternoon’s Selma Rotary Club Meeting.
According to former Selma Rotary Club President Bill Gamble, who introduced the award, Miller had to be tricked into attending the meeting by being told that his son, Jai, was the one being honored.
“In making the selection for Citizen of the Year, what the committee and board of directors look at is for someone who exceeds the expectations of a normal citizen,” said Gamble. “My observation is that he [Miller] loves Selma and he exemplifies that love of Selma not just by saying so, but by doing something about it.”
Gamble went on to describe Miller’s contributions to the City of Selma, and its citizens.
“Despite all that this person [Miller] has done for our city,” said Gamble, “Perhaps his greatest achievement really isn’t that known to the public. He [Miller] is a man that works behind the scenes to help, directly, the people who are in need.”
Gamble stated that Miller frequently buys groceries for families in need, makes donations to local schools and helps others with their bills.
“That’s his real contribution to our city and that’s what being Citizen of the Year is all about,” said Gamble.
Former Selma Mayor George Evans, a friend of Miller’s, also took to the podium to say a few words about the award winner.
“I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor and certainly he contributes so much to our city and community,” said Evans.
Miller expressed humility and gratitude in being named this year’s Citizen of the Year.
“It’s an honor to be recognized by this civic organization,” said Miller. “Only one per year can get it. It’s a happy feeling to know that your peers think enough of you to give you this honor.”
