Selma High School Valedictorian Lakira Fails didn’t expect to cry during her valedictory address, even two weeks later she isn’t quite sure what brought up the few tears she shed while delivering her speech.

“I don’t even know why I started crying,” said Fails, “I guess it just hit me than I’m about to leave behind all of these people I’ve been with for the last 12 years.”

Fails’ moment of vulnerability is understandable. It can be difficult for young people to transition into the next stage of life.

Despite that difficulty, Fails is excited to begin her studies at Alabama A&M this fall where she plans to major in business and minor in accounting.

Fails has always dreamed of owning her own business. She realized her dream on a smaller scale last month by starting Luxurious Lengths, her own online store in which she sells handmade wigs and hair extensions.

Upon graduating, Fails wishes to expand upon her business and venture into the world of clothing.

“I’ve always really loved shopping,” said Fails.

Though Fails finished her high school career as Valedictorian she began the school year as the third ranked student in her class.

Fails said that she worked hard to improve her rank by taking dual enrollment classes at Wallace Community College- Selma.

Lakira said that her parents were a huge motivation for her to finish the year as valedictorian.

“My parents were paying for my dual enrollment classes out of pocket,” said Fails, “I just wanted to show them how much I appreciated that by doing my best.”
