Survivors recognized at Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society’s Selma-Dallas County Relay for Life Was held Friday evening at the Lion’s Club Fair Park.
Cancer survivors and their families from all over Dallas County came out to support the American Cancer Society’s mission of combatting cancer.
The evening began with a few welcoming words from Orrville Mayor Louvenia Lumpkin.
“On behalf of the town of Orrville, we’re so proud tonight to be part of this great program,” she said.
The survivors carried the Relay for Life banner as they marched laps around Lions Fair Park before being presented ribbons for their survivor status.
Dianne Harris, a 21-year cancer survivor as well as Foot Soldier in the 1965 Voting Rights movement was among those who came out to Lions Fair Park on Friday evening.
“I’m a 21-year survivor,” said Harris. “I’m going to go march as many laps as I can.”
Following the march, the survivors were recognized.
Each survivor had their name called by Selma American Cancer Society Community Development Manager Quenita Mitchell and was awarded a purple ribbon for their participation.
The event also featured food, music and activities for children including inflatables and a train ride.
Later in the evening, after sundown, participants lit luminarias for friends and family members affected by cancer.
