Tomorrow morning marks the long-awaited return of the Dallas County Farmers Market.
Beginning Saturday, the Farmer’s Market will be set at Bloch Park from 6 a.m. – 2 p.m., or until the last vendor sells out, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday until Nov. 15.
County Extension Coordinator Callie Nelson said that the Farmer’s Market is good for the Dallas County community for multiple reasons.
According to Nelson, the market generates income and revenue for local farmers and vendors and provides the community with fresh, healthy foods.
Nelson said that Dallas County suffers from a high obesity rate and that the farmers market can be a great aide in combatting a citizen’s health problems.
“By eating fresh, healthy foods we can reduce the obesity that leads to many diseases like high cholesterol and diabetes,” said Nelson.
Nelson personally loves attending the farmers market to discuss food preparation with the vendors and other shoppers. The market also gives her a chance to revisit her childhood.
“I grew up on a farm canning, freezing and preparing vegetables and fruits to eat the rest of the year,” said Nelson.
Shoppers at the Farmers Market can expect to see more than just fruits and vegetables.
Dallas County Farmers Market Co-Manager Randall Chandler says that shoppers can expect to find a little of everything including plants, flowers and farm fresh eggs in addition to the expected fruits and vegetables.
“You get great fresh stuff,” said Chandler.
