Former Dallas County football/basketball coach returns to Alabama

A former Dallas County coach is returning to the state of Alabama.

Marty Smith was hired as Thompson High School Girls’ basketball coach.

Smith was the head football coach at Dallas County School for three years and an assistant basketball coach.

Smith was an assistant basketball coach on Dallas County’s Class 4A Boys basketball title squad in 2014. The Hornets’ six-foot-eight center William Lee, a UAB signee, was Alabama’s Mr. Basketball and 4A player of the year that season.

Smith was 15-17 in three seasons as Dallas County’s football coach from 2014-2016 and led the Hornets to a pair of 4A state playoff berths. Greenville beat the Hornets 42-15 in the first round three years ago. Beauregard eliminated Dallas County 41-0 in round one of the 4A playoffs in 2016.

In 2003 and 2004, Smith coached John Carroll to back-to-back Class 6A Boys basketball state championships.
