Selma-area music fans should have a big date circled on their calendars.

On Saturday, June 8, Alvin Garrett, Logan the Entertainer and American Idol season 2 winner Ruben Studdard will come together for a soulful performance dubbed, “An Evening with the Cats”, at the Selma High School Auditorium.

The show was put together by Garrett, a Grammy-nominated producer, singer/songwriter and musician, and Selma native Collins Pettaway, III.

According to Garrett, the idea for “An Evening with the Cats” grew out of the group’s Christmas show, “Christmas with the Cats”, which is performed in Birmingham each holiday season.
“We all got together and said, ‘Let’s take this show on the road outside of the Christmas season,’” said Garett.

Garett thought Selma would be the perfect place to bring the performance, he’s performed here the past several years as part of the annual Jubilee festival.

“Selma has been a place that has really embraced us and our music and we just wanted to come down and share the good vibes,” said Garrett.

A family member put him in touch with Pettaway to make the show happen.

“I heard that he [Pettaway] was the brightest and sharpest young man around to help me pull this off,” said Garrett. “And so far, he hasn’t disappointed me.”

“I’m so grateful and excited and humbled to be able to bring something like this to Selma,” said Pettaway. “This is going to be a performance that people aren’t going to want to miss.”

Garrett described the performance as “an evening of soul”. The show will feature classics from soul legends like Luther Vandross, Al Green and Johnny Taylor as well as original songs from

Garrett, Studdard and Logan the Entertainer.

According to Garrett, the three men have been performing together for almost 20 years.

Garrett say that the three of them come together and each bring something different to the table while still offering a cohesive performance.

“Ruben [Studdard] has that voice that’s as smooth as velvet and Logan the Entertainer is a dancing machine,” said Garrett. “I’m somewhere in between.”

Garrett said that he wants people to leave the show feeling joyful.

“We just want people to come out and be touched by good music,” said Garrett.
