The city of Valley Grande granted authority for consent to abate certain city sales and use taxes by Dallas County for a solar project that could potentially take place in two years.

Dallas County Probate Judge Jimmy Nunn and Economic Development Authority Executive Director Wayne Vardaman addressed the Valley Grande City Council on Monday how a potential solar project would benefit the county.

The abate sales and use tax in Valley Grande is $103,000. Dallas County school tax is $1.5 million over 10 years.

“It shows a good collaboration and teamwork between Valley Grande and Dallas County,” Nunn said. “Dallas County is on board for abating property tax.”

Nunn said if the project comes to fruition, the abatement tax should fall between $3 and $4 million and would go to Dallas County Schools.

“Dallas County schools are in desperate need of money,” Nunn said. “We just passed the one cent sales tax with Dallas County getting one million and Selma city schools getting one million.”

The city council also discussed the Lauren Lane Subdivision Preliminary Plat, which three lots didn’t initially meet requirements. Under a updated plan, the plat will meet requirements.

The next Valley Grande City Council meeting will be held on June 3 at 6 p.m. at Valley Grande City Hall.
