Morgan Academy faces Pike Liberal Arts in AISA State Baseball Championship Series Wednesday

When Gunnar Henderson, Brayton Brown and David Ducote signed with Auburn University six months ago, Morgan Academy became the favorites to win a AISA State Baseball Championship.
The top-ranked Senators (29-0) can clinch the school’s first baseball title with a sweep over Pike Liberal Arts on Wednesday at River Walk Stadium in Montgomery. First pitch for Game 1 is at 10 a.m., with the second contest to follow immediately after. A third game, if necessary, will be played at Thursday.
Henderson, the state’s top-ranked prep baseball player, said winning a title is the perfect way to end his Morgan Academy career.
“It means everything that we get to play for a state championship and bring a title to Morgan Academy,” Henderson said.
Ducote wondered how he would fit in after transferring from St. Andrew Episcopal School in Ridgeland. He was a solid addition to the Senators’ lineup.
“It means a lot that we’re playing for a state title,” Ducote said. “When you have depth like us, it makes a lot of stress-free at-bats.”
Brown said the unbeaten Senators are focused on winning Game 1, not celebrating a state title.
“Our record doesn’t mean much unless you win a state championship,” Brown said.
Jeremy Lee, Dione Allen, Xavier Green, Joseph Estes, Milam Turner and Matthew Davis round out the Senators’ balanced lineup.
First-year Morgan Academy coach Stephen Clements said the Senators are not looking past Pike Liberal Arts, the defending state champions.
“We are super excited to be in this series,” Clements said. “Pike is the defending state champions and have experience playing in the finals. We all know that should be a huge confidence builder in their program. We have to come out and play well to give ourselves a chance against a great team and program like Pike. We are beyond excited to be here and thankful God blessed us throughout the course of the season. All the glory is to him.”
