The Knights and Orchids Society Inc. (TKO) hosted the second annual Selma Pride event over the weekend. The festivities began Friday night and continued until Sunday afternoon.
TKO is a southern centered grassroots startup founded and led by black, queer, transgender and gender non-conforming people supporting gender justice and LGBTQ visibility.
Selma Pride began Friday night with an artist reception dinner featuring a preview of the upcoming documentary Dirt Road Glory filmed by Huntsville filmmaker Traniesa “TC” Caldwell.
“The film featured mostly transwomen of color, and some of them were present to see themselves for the first time on film,” said TKO Representative Christina Nicholson. “It was a beautiful moment to see a group so underrepresented witness one another’s stories together.”
On Saturday afternoon, a Splash and Status Jam was held featuring food, vendors and live performances, including American Idol favorite Asher Havon.
“Our performers and attendees had such a great time on Saturday, dancing and singing together,” said Nicholson.
The climax of the weekend’s festivities occurred late Saturday night at the Selma Reconciliation Center where a drag show featuring local performers occurred.
The headliner for the evening was “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen.
Despite the venue’s small crowd, Bob the Drag Queen delivered a lively performance featuring lip synching, dancing and stand-up comedy.
“There may only be 14 people here, I counted because I’m petty,” said Bob, “But I’m going to perform like there’s 1,400.”
