In a press release Thursday, the Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) announced that one possible case of measles has been confirmed in the state, making Alabama the 23rd state to battle the illness originally eradicated nearly 20 years ago.

An infant in St. Clair County contracted the illness, which officials are saying is the only current measles case in Alabama, and was considered contagious through Wednesday.

The child is not in daycare and has not traveled out of state.

The ADPH is working to confirm the diagnosis and notify people who might have come in contact with the child.

This year, the ADPH has investigated 174 possible cases of measles, with 32 still open, but this is the first potentially positive case.

The press release notes that measles is a highly-contagious illness and citizens should ensure that they have been vaccinated to ensure immunity.
