Morgan Academy is a win away from playing for the AISA State Baseball Championships.
David Ducote and Xavier Green each homered as the Senators pounded Lee-Scott 14-4 in Game 1 of the AISA State Baseball Playoff series on Wednesday. Jeremy Lee was the winning pitcher.
The Senators (27-0) can clinch a state title series berth with a victory on Thursday at 4 p.m. at home. Game 3, if needed, will be played at immediately after.
“Winning game one is huge,” Senators coach Stephen Clements said. “All we have to do is win one more. We swung the bats well tonight.”
The Senators jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead. Gunnar Henderson scored on a balk, followed by Green’s two-run homer. Milem Turner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Ducote drew a bases-loaded walk.
“I got a good pitch and thankfully, it went over the fence,” Green said.
The Warriors got within 5-3, but in the second inning, Brayton Brown scored on a fielding error and Matthew Davis added a sacrifice fly as the Senators led 7-3.
In the third inning, Ducote hit a solo homer and Henderson scored on a wild pitch for a 9-3 Senators lead.
“I was looking for a good pitch to hit and I got one,” Ducote said.
Morgan Academy extended its lead to 11-3 in the fourth as Joseph Estes scored on a wild pitch and Brown had a bases-loaded walk. The game ended in the sixth on RBI singles by Ducote and Green. Brown also had an RBI walk.
