Former Selma Mayor George Evans awarded four $2,000 checks to four different organizations on Thursday at the Cahaba Center.

Proceeds from the ninth annual GPE Golf Classic played on Oct. 15, 2018 were awarded to support special needs children at Cahaba Mental Health, West Alabama Rehabilitation Easter-Seals, Selma City Schools and Dallas County Schools.

“It was successful, I want to thank the sponsors and volunteers that help me this year,” Evans said. “I hope to get more sponsors for next year. I started this program nine years ago to give back to special needs children and make them feel part of society.”

Selma City Schools Special Education Director Courtney Utsey said she appreciates Evans’ desire to help special needs kids.

Each of the organization explained their plans for the donations.

Utsey said their donation will go toward buying art supplies for the school’s Special Education Art Night.

Kellee Waters of the Dallas County School system said they will use their funds toward purchasing instruction supplies.

Jennifer Jones of the Easter Seals said they will use their funds on instructional programming, including laptops.

Tracey Craig of the Cahaba Mental Center said they will use the money to purchase more education and buy Christmas gifts for the kids’ families.
