Prolific folk musician and activist Joan Baez kicked off her “Fare Thee Well” tour at the Walton Theater on Tuesday night.
Baez played for a sold-out crowd performing songs from her entire catalog spanning nearly 60 years.
Fans came from both far and near to hear Baez perform. Maurine Sampson, Carol Horton and Janet Redman traveled from St. Louis, Missouri all the way to Selma to see Baez.
The small group of Baez fans planned on catching a couple of more shows on the “Fare Thee Well” tour, including Birmingham and St. Louis.
“She embodies everything I think a human being should embody,” said Sampson. “And there’s also her voice.”
In a way, returning to Selma was like a Homecoming for Baez.
Early in her Career, Baez participated in the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March in 1965 alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Other Civil Rights Leaders.
Early in the evening’s performance Baez played the song “Last Leaf” from her latest album “Whistle Down the Wind”.
“I sometimes feel like the last leaf on the tree,” Baez told the crowd. “I met with some of the Foot Soldiers [those who participated in the Voting Rights March] earlier today, and I feel like they’re on the tree with me.”
