Morgan Academy’s David Cothran will be staying in state to continue his golf career.
Cothran signed a scholarship at Snead State Community College on Wednesday in the school Gymnasium.
Cothran said he’s looking forward to playing golf and attending Snead State CC, located in Boaz and a three-hour drive from Selma.
“Snead State is a small place and it felt like home when I visited the campus,” Cothran said. “The golf course is nice and they have a good program.”
Morgan Academy golf coach Ira Wagoner said Snead State CC is getting a talented golfer in Cothran, who led the Senators to a state golf title last year.
“David is a good person and good student,” Wagoner said. “He’s a very good teammate. David didn’t start playing golf until five years ago and he’s progressed since.”
Snead State CC golf Chuck Kalanick said Cothran has the qualities needed to become a quality golfer.
“I look at three things whenever I sign a golfer: golf ability, personality and grades, and David fits all of those,” Kalanick said. “I watched film of David and he came to visit. David’s swing is very consistent.”
Cothran, who has a 3.6 GPA, said he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. He plans on transferring to a Division I school after finishing at Snead State CC and possibly playing golf at the next level.
Morgan Academy Headmaster and basketball coach Mark Knight praised Cothran for taking the Junior College route.
“A lot of kids frown on junior colleges, but that’s where you get your basic courses and those courses transfer to any school,” Knight said. “David works hard and has a good family at home that supports him. He’s a great kid.”
