Historic Selma 5K a success

The MJ93-90 Foundation Historic Selma 5K Marathon got started early Saturday morning.
The five runners: Rayne Osborn, Blair Bennet, Abbie Tucker and John and Sarah Cox arrived at Martin Luther King Memorial Park at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge around 6:30 a.m. to warm up before the race began at 7 a.m.
Michael Johnson, Founder of MJ93-90 Foundation and Cincinnati Bengals defensive end also arrived to participate in the 5K although he was just “taking it easy” due to recent hip surgery. “This will be the most physical activity I’ve done since my last football game,” Johnson said.
All six of the participants took off around 7 a.m.
The runners were escorted by Selma Police Department across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and onto Broad Street, J.L. Chestnut Jr. Boulevard, Martin Luther King Street, Alabama Avenue and back across the Edmund Pettus Bridge to the park.
Rayne Osborn was the first runner to finish coming in at 17:27:11. The rest of the runners finished the race as a group coming in at around 20:35.
“If it was hot, I don’t know if I would have made it,” said John Cox.
Although he was purposefully keeping a slower pace to keep his injury healthy, Johnson arrived back at the park a few minutes later.
After Johnson arrived, he personally thanked each of the runners for their participation and each runner was give an MJ9390 gift bag filled with an MJ93-90 T-shirt, a bottle of Gatorade, a granola bar and a ticket to have brunch with Johnson at the Not Your Usual Health Fair, another MJ93-90 event, being held later that morning.
After the runners received their bags, the headed to Wallace Community College- Selma for the Meet and Greet Brunch and Award Ceremony.
