Gas tax headed to Senate floor

On Monday, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey’s gas tax proposal got the greenlight from the Senate Transportation and Energy Committee and will be taken up on the chamber floor Tuesday.
The gas tax bill will impose an additional 10-cents per gallon on fuel over the next three years and impose additional fees on Alabama drivers with electric or hybrid vehicles.
A partner bill, carried by Alabama Sen. Clyde Chambliss, R-Prattville, allows for more oversight of the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Last week, the legislation began making its rounds through the appropriate chambers and committees after Ivey called for a special session following her “State of the State” address.
The special session means that legislators cannot debate bills unrelated to the gas tax and allows for the bill to pass with a simple majority.
The bill cleared the Alabama House of Representatives Friday and Rep. Prince Chestnut, D-Selma, was one of the legislators who voted in favor of the measure.
Chestnut stated that the legislation has widespread support from a number of professional association for businesses and farmers, as well as city councils and county commissions across the state.
“When I first announced my candidacy for elected office, I ran on the strength that I would work to improve roads and bridges,” Chestnut said. “[The gas tax bill] does just that.”
Chestnut said there will be “controls and restrictions” in place to ensure that the revenue generated from the increase in fuel taxes goes “directly to address the costs of road and bridge construction.”
Further, Chestnut said, the bill’s sponsor has claimed the bill will be “generationally transformational.”
“We will go from the bottom tier of the Southeastern states to the middle as it relates to our road and bridge infrastructure,” Chestnut said.
It is unclear how Selma’s representative in the Alabama Senate will vote when the measure goes before the full body – Sen. Malika Sanders-Fortier, D-Selma, did not respond to a request for comment.
