On Monday afternoon, an 18-wheeler veered off of Highway 80 and crashed into the Southside High School Gymnasium.
The driver of the truck, James Shannon Minter, of Broxton, Georgia was pronounced dead at the scene.
While no students or faculty at Southside High School were harmed in the accident, Southside High School has been damaged.
According to Dallas County Schools Superintendent Hattie Shelton, the exact amount of damage is still undetermined.
“We are awaiting a report from a structural engineer,” said Shelton.
In the meantime, the hole in the gym created by the truck has been boarded up, and will not be used by faculty and students until it has been repaired.
Shelton said that despite the damage, the day-to-day activities of Southside High School have not been changed.
“P.E. classes that were being held in that gym have simply been moved to the other gym,” Shelton said.
Shelton shared her remorse for Minter and his family, but was thankful no faculty, staff or students from Southside High School was harmed.
