Two Selma residents were sentenced on murder charges Monday at the Dallas County Courthouse.
Devontae Terrell Jiles was sentenced to life without parole for capital murder and life for attempted murder in the fatal shooting of James Hudgens on March 14, 2015 in the Old Town Community. Hudgens was visiting his uncle.
Jiles, who pled guilty on Oct. 22, 2018, fired a 12-gauge shotgun twice, according to Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson. Jiles struck Hudgens once in the face. Hudgens died upon arrival at a Montgomery Hospital after being transported by medical helicopter.
Kendarius Brown, the co-defendant, pled guilty to felony-murder and received a 30-year sentence and 10 years on breaking and entering of a motor vehicle. All sentences will run concurrent.
Dallas County Circuit Court Judge Marvin Wiggins made both sentences in his courtroom.
Jackson said both sentences were justified.
“This was a totally senseless killing,” Jackson said. “These two gunslingers will now be off the streets. Both defendants state they were sorry for what happened, but they should have used their brains before they committed these horrific acts. This tragedy has been very rough on the deceased family members.”
