Several Presidential candidates to appear at Jubilee Crossing

This weekend’s Jubilee Crossing will have an impact on the national political scale at least on the Democrat side.

Several Democrats are using the Jubilee as their launching pad for the 2020 Presidential race in a battle to challenge President Donald Trump at next year’s major election.

Senators Bernie Sanders, I-VT, Cory Booker, D-NJ, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, D-NY, all have committed to attending the Jubilee.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Sen. Clinton announced at the Jubilee that she’s going to run for President again. We all remember in 2008 that she lost the Democrat nomination to Sen. Barack Obama, who went on to serve two terms as President. Clinton held off Sanders for the Democrat nomination in 2016, but she eventually lost to Trump.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-OH, and former Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro are the other Presidential candidates expected to attend.

Former State Sen. Hank Sanders said Monday presidential candidates Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-CA, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-MN, received invitations, but are unable to attend. Harris attended the 2018 Jubilee.

Sanders also said he hadn’t received confirmation from former Vice President and potential Presidential candidate Joe Biden.

If I were seriously considering a run at the Oval Office, I’m spending this weekend in Selma.

What I’d like to see from Presidential candidates is a visit to the Queen City without the benefit of a special occasion. Show us that you really care about the Black Belt and not use the area as your personal platform.

Only two sitting U.S. Presidents have ever attended the Jubilee: Bill Clinton in 2000 and Obama in 2015. Former President George W. Bush attended the event the same year as Obama did.

Clinton and Sanders are known commodities. It will be interesting to see how Dallas County residents take to Booker.
