The Wallace Community College-Selma women’s basketball team has earned a berth in next month’s ACCC Tournament.
The Lady Patriots (10-18, 7-4 South Division) are a game behind Bishop State for second place in the Division standings. According to Lady Patriots coach Herman Turner, WCCS would lose the tiebreaker with Bishop State. The top two teams in each division earn byes.
Turner said he’s pleased with the Lady Patriots heading into the ACCC tournament, which will be played March 5-9 at Lawson State in Birmingham.
“The season went well,” Turner said. “We had the toughest schedule in the South Division. We had a lot of injuries. Then, The Selma Times-Journal’s player of the year, Shatavia Moore, tore her ACL.”
Turner saw several bright spots despite losing Moore, a former Keith High standout.
Freshman Kahyanne Bolton was named ACCC’s women player of the week for Feb. 11-17. Another freshman, Amber Richardson, earned ACCC player of the week honors for the period of Jan. 14-20. Richardson is averaging a ACCC-best 13.5 rebounds a game.
“We feel good about the team going into the tournament,” Turner said. “Our lack of depth will take its toll.”
