Wallace Community College-Selma played its home finale on Thursday night.
Sophomore Tomonique Marion scored 22 points as the Patriots trounced Coastal Alabama East 94-75 at WCCS Gymnasium.
It was only WCCS’ second win of the season and didn’t qualify for the ACCA Tournament. WCCS coach Duane Evans said the Patriots (2-27) forfeited seven games for using an ineligible player. Evans did not name the player ruled ineligible.
“It’s been a long season,” Evans said. “With a young team, it was tough to find chemistry and find an edge.”
Marion said the Patriots were motivated to close the season on a positive note.
“We wanted to win our last home game,” Marion said. “It was very important that we won this game. Our family had come out to see us play.”
The Patriots had four other double-figure scorers, all freshmen. Antonio Jones added 19 points. Kaelon Hinton followed with 17. Marlon Sharp and Corey Thomas each finished with 10 points.
Evans said he’s excited to next year’s squad.
“We have a young team,” Evans said. “I’m looking forward to bringing this veteran team back next year.”
The game was tight in the first eight minutes until WCCS took control.
The Patriots led 28-20 at the 10 minute mark of the first half. Marion led the way with eight points.
From there, the Patriots relied on their red-hot three-point shooting.
Hinton nailed a pair of three-pointers as the Patriots led 46-34 at halftime.
Coastal Alabama reeled off eight straight points to cut the deficit to 46-42 three minutes into the second half.
WCCS, however, regained control with a 8-0 run and never let the Warhawks get within striking distance again.
Jones, Thomas and Sharp all hit big shots down the stretch for the Patriots, who led by as many as 20 points with six minutes left.
WCCS will close its season on Monday at Coastal Alabama North at Enterprise State Community College at 7:30 p.m.
