Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Michael Johnson will host an entire day dedicated to promoting good health on Saturday, March 16.
The day dedicated to informing Selma residents about healthy living includes an early morning 5K marathon and a health fair beginning at 10 a.m.
Johnson, who graduated from Dallas County High School, has been spending his off-season giving back to the Selma community for the last a decade. Johnson has helped the community of Selma by hosting area football camps, encouraging technology proficiency among students and giving to families in need.
Saturdays events, presented by Johnson’s MJ 93-90 Foundation, are to get people to focus on fitness and exercise to avoid problems like obesity, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, many of which plague Johnson’s own family.
The day begins with a Historic Selma 5K Marathon at 7 a.m. and a 1-mile fun run beginning at 8 a.m. The race begins and ends at Martin Luther King Memorial Park at the foot of Edmund Pettus Bridge and goes through historic Selma.
“Michael always says, ‘This [Selma] is my city and I want people to know my city,’” said MJ 93-90 Secretary, and Johnson’s mother, Thomasene Johnson.
Runners are invited to attend a meet and greet brunch and award ceremony hosted by Johnson.
10 a.m. kicks off the “Not Your Usual Health Fair”. The health fair provides attendees the opportunity to learn about healthy food, exercise and get health screenings.
“This is a way to promote conventional as well as unconventional health,” said Thomasene Johnson.
Registration for the 5K is $25 per person and $30 on race day. The “Not Your Usual Health Fair” event is free to attend.NFL
