Two minutes stood between Selma High and a berth in the Class 6A Girls’ Southwest Regional Finals. The Lady Saints led Blount 58-57.
Second-ranked Blount outscored Selma 12-5 over the final two minutes on the way to a 69-63 victory Friday at Alabama State University.
The Lady Saints finished at 21-9, while Blount advances to next week’s Regional finals.
Myciah Thrash led a furious Blount rally with 21 points. Thrash’s three-pointer with 1:11 left broke a 61-all tie and gave Blount the lead for good. Thrash also added a layup during the stretch to end Selma’s hopes of a comeback. Blount overcame a 10-point second half deficit.
“It’s the kind of game that definitely lets you know what your team is built on,” Blount coach Kim Perry said. “Selma is a well-coached team. We fought back and overcame adversity.”
Thrash said the Lady Leopards weren’t intimidated after falling behind double-digits, especially when Rodericka Parker’s three-pointer tied the game at 61-all with 1:30 left in regulation.
Selma controlled most of the game, leading 42-32 with three minutes left in the third quarter. At that point, Ta’Sharri Grimes went out with an eye injury.
The Lady Leopards took advantage, going on a 10-4 run to get within 46-42 after three quarters. Jajuana Lambert had six of her 16 points in the run.
Blount (25-4) continued its onslaught in the fourth quarter, scoring 27 points. Grimes eventually fouled out in her last game as a Lady Saint, finishing with 12 points.
“I think our girls got a little frustrated,” Lady Saints coach Anthony Harris said. “Ta’Sharri Grimes got hurt, then fouled out and that hurt us. We went up by 10 twice, but we couldn’t finish. We had too many miscues and players got into foul trouble.”
The loss overshadowed a strong performance by Parker, who led all scorers with 23 points. Aaliyah Hatcher added 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds in her high school finale.
“We had good times and bad times on this team,” Grimes said. “We fought, but we still managed to have fun.”
Parker, a junior, said she learned a lot about the postseason.
“I want to go harder next time,” Parker said. “We almost had it.”
Selma controlled most of the first half, leading 14-12 after one quarter and 28-22 at halftime. Parker had eight points, Grimes added six and Hatcher scored five. Alexis Scott Windham kept Blount within distance in the first half, scoring eight of her 14 points.
“Hatcher, Parker and Grimes carried us this season,” Harris said. “I hate to lose Grimes and Hatcher, but Parker will be back. I appreciated these young ladies.”
