U.S. Sen. Richard Shelby, R_AL, Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, voted in favor of a spending package that would allow the government to avoid a second shutdown.
“Passage of this funding legislation is outstanding news for the people of our state and nation,” Shelby said. “I am pleased that we were able to negotiate in a bipartisan, bicameral manner to meet each other half way, finishing out the year’s appropriations process to better secure America. The bill contains critical funding for border security and many essential priorities throughout the country.”
Shelby noted that the legislation will affect Alabama by funding projects that will impact agriculture, transportation, law enforcement and civil space industries.
“I look forward to seeing Alabama benefit from the resources included in this comprehensive package and plan to continue working to promote the best interests of the state.”
The appropriations package was approved by a vote of 83-16 and forwarded on to the president for final approval.
As well as saving the country from a second government shutdown, the legislation tackles issues related to commerce, justice, science, the environment, security and related agencies.
According to the Associated Press, President Donald Trump is slated to approve the deal and then declare a national emergency to construct a border wall.
At press time, the fate of the bill had not been decided.
